“Yo Jay, I got a Reasonable Doubt / If I knocked on your door would you come on out?” So raps MC Hammer, who recently put his Christian ministry on hold to take a swipe at Jay-Z on the new single “Better Run Run.” Released on Halloween, the song is a response to Kanye West’s new single, “So Appalled,” which features a Jay-Z cameo that mocks Hammer’s infamous money problems. MC Hammer also released an accompanying music video, in which a Hova lookalike is seen running from a man in a devil’s costume. At the end, Hammer forgives his aggressor by baptizing Jay-Z in a lake. Too legit. [Guardian.co.uk]
Mathieu Deflem, a sociology professor at the University Of South Carolina, will offer a course on Lady Gaga this spring. “Lady Gaga And The Sociology Of The Fame” will focus on Gaga as a social phenomenon, and only 50 students will be admitted during the course’s first run. “Other people say that Gaga’s the new Madonna,” said Deflem, who has attended nearly 30 Lady Gaga concerts since 2008, “but I don’t see it that way at all. I see it more like there’s people who have this very individual thing. Frank Zappa had it. Prince had it. Miles Davis had it. Jimi Hendrix had it. And Lady Gaga has it.” [NME.com]

The ActionR.I.P. Reg King, singer of North London ’60s mod group the Action. Much of the band’s blue-eyed soul appeal lay in King’s smooth but powerful vocals, which was a perfect fit for Motown covers like their version of the Marvelettes’ “I’ll Keep Holding On.” King left the Action, who then morphed into Mighty Baby, in 1968 after the band tried a more psychedelic vein on the album Rolled Gold. King’s solo career foundered after his self-titled 1971 solo album failed to sell; however, starting in the late ’90s, he reunited with the Action for dates in the UK and Europe. Few details are known about King’s death other than that he passed from “an illness.” [TheStranger.com]

Wanna hear some real rock & roll, like the kind you heard when you were a kid? The kind that peels the paint off the walls and makes you wanna drink, fight and frolic? Don’t turn to the radio unless you are in the mood to hear Bad Company for the millionth time or listen to some Nickelback-y belter boring you to tears with his pervy needs. Don’t look to major labels to help you because by the time they get ahold of a decent band they’ll figure out a way to ruin them. Sorry kid, you need to do some digging. What you need is to get hip to the underground sounds. Follow me past the jump and I’ll explain.

Steve Perry was spotted at the San Francisco Giants’ playoff game last week, waving an orange pompom and singing his heart out while “Don’t Stop Believing” played through the AT&T Park’s public address system. Arnel Pineda may be Journey’s official frontman nowadays, but it looks like Perry may be having the better time. (also spotted, and looking far less cheerful, was King Buzzo of the Melvins.) Thursday Dance-Off!

It’s Thursday, and for some reason I feel like dancing. Maybe it was the Xtra Grande Double Caff Latte I just drank, or maybe it was the two apple fritters I scarfed down in the AMG canteen. Doesn’t matter … let’s just toss our cares into the air and wave them like we really don’t mind. Clicking through will give you a sample of some of the many dance crazes to choose from. Hmm, I think I’ll start off with the Dougie, slide into some Mashed Potato, and then finish up with the Lindy Hop.

American Idol may have a new judging panel, but that doesn’t mean Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi are finished with their reality TV days. Cowell, who left the show earlier this year, is still prepping a stateside version of The X Factor to launch next Fall, while DioGuardi has been tapped by Bravo to judge one of the network’s new programs. Slated to appear sometime in 2011, Going Platinum will function like an American Idol for singer/songwriters, meaning it’ll prize the Jason Castros of the world over the Carrie Underwoods. Contestants will write their own material, perform it for judges, and live together in a house. Jewel is hosting the show. [EW.com]
